Carolina Performing Arts deserves a warm round of applause this semester for bringing some of the world’s most breath-taking performances to UNC.
Just last week, they brought us the world-renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. This week, the incredible Canadian circus art group, Ciruque Éloize, graced the stage (and aisles) of Memorial Hall.
The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, founded in 1958 by choreographer Alvin Ailey, is a world-famous contemporary ballet company known internationally for their exquisite style and technique.
The show featured original choreography by Alvin Ailey and Ulysses Dove as well as more contemporary names such as Christopher L. Huggins and Robert Battle, all under the artistic direction of Judith Jamison and Masazumi Chaya. The dancers reached perfection in their execution and the pique of passion in their performance.
Check out a clip from Alvin Ailey’s sensational classic, “Revelations,” an exceptional piece that explores the depths of the human experience:
Cirque Éloize gave an equally as impressive performance this week with their innovative new show, “iD”, written and directed by Jeannot Painchaud and Mourad Merzouki. An exciting compilation of acrobatics, contortion, urbania and hip hop, “iD” fits well into the realm of our technology driven generation.
Filled with jaw-dropping stunts and eye-popping surprises, iD was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. Imagine an up-beat cross-over between Cirque du Soleil, The Twilight Zone, and urban street hip hop, and voilà! you’ve got “iD”.
