Student leaders on campus have organized a tribute to slain Student Body President Eve Carson by purchasing “EVE” buttons for students to wear to the UNC-Duke basketball game on Saturday as a tribute to the basketball-loving student leader who was killed three years ago Saturday.
“Eve was known for her fierce passion for Carolina,” wrote Student Body President Hogan Medlin in an e-mail to student leaders. “I can think of no better place to celebrate Eve than a Carolina/DOOK game…she would be there too, no doubt, front row.”
The much-admired student leader was killed March 5, 2008, prompting an outpouring of grief from the community. The Eve Carson Scholarship was created in her memory.
While there was no large, University-sponsored event on campus to remember Carson’s death this year, the Morehead-Cain Foundation held a memorial service this week, and Medlin worked with the Carolina Athletic Association and the Dean of Students Office to purchase the buttons for Saturday’s game.
Medlin said that Winston Crisp, vice chancellor for student affairs, volunteered to help pay for the buttons to be printed, shipped, and delivered in time for the game, where they will be passed out to students. Once they run out of buttons, CAA members will pass out stickers.
“Please, if you have the time or happen to see him, please please please thank Vice-Chancellor Crisp for putting up the funds to make this happen,” Medlin wrote. “Imagine this: the entire riser section, a sea of Carolina blue, accented with a button that simply says EVE. A great way to keep her present and in our reflections.”
Students attending the game will receive the buttons at the door, and anyone interested in honoring Carson’s legacy can contribute to the Eve Carson Scholarship here.
