On Tuesday night, Student Congress chose not to override Student Body President Mary Cooper’s veto of the College Republicans’ appropriations bill.
The majority of College Republicans’ requested funds would have funded a speaking event by Republican pundit Ann Coulter.
Student Congress needed a two-thirds majority of present and voting members to agree. Only one member voted to override the veto, and one abstained.
Other highlights of the evening included discussions on allocations for the Global Brigade, Tar Heel Rifle and Pistol Club and the Carolina Review.
$2500 was appropriated to Global Brigades, a dental, medical, public health and water coalition that travels abroad to deliver humanitarian aid.
After deliberation over the Tar Heel Rifle and Pistol Club’s request of student fees to purchase live ammunition and bring activist Andrew Breitbart to speak to a gun club, Student Congress voted to appropriate a portion of the funds requested.
The Carolina Review, a conservative and libertarian publication, was awarded $13,095 to fund five out of their eight annual publications.
Currently, Congress has appropriated one-third of its $155,000 semester budget, said Jared Simmons, chairman of the finance committee of Student Congress.
