The frosty weather we have been experiencing lately has made me want to hibernate in my dorm and do absolutely nothing that requires physical activity, but luckily, the UNC Bucket List had the perfect remedy to warm me up — #46: a Zumba class at the Student Recreation Center.
Sure, I had heard all of the hype about Zumba before, I just didn’t think that Latin workout dancing was really my thing. But now that I have tried Zumba for the first time, I have no idea how I went all semester without it!
Colleen D., who runs the weekly Tuesday night class, is full of energy and enthusiasm. The class basically feels like a super exciting dance party. You’ll forget that you’re working out as you dance along to the playlist, full of different lively beats—everything from Rihanna jams to Latin grooves.
The instructor will start off each class by showing everyone the basic moves, but it is incredibly easy to catch on once you get going. The steps are not complicated, and the intense atmosphere keeps everyone on their toes for the entire hour.
Most of the routines are repeated week after week, so you can easily master the steps if you become a Zumba regular, but sometimes the instructors add some new additions to spice things up even more.
If you are like me though, and have absolutely no rhythm, that’s OK too. The great thing about Zumba is that as long as you are dancing to the music and having fun with it, you will get a great workout. No one will stare at you strangely if you start making up your own moves (trust me) because it is all part of the Zumba spirit.
After attending my first Zumba class at the SRC, I can definitely see why it is on the bucket list. Every student should try the latest and most exciting fitness sensation on campus — and despite what you may have heard, it is not just for girls!
