In case you thought your school was a little lacking in its credential game, just add UNC School of Medicine Professor Aziz Sancar — the recently announced 2015 Nobel Prize recipient in chemistry — to the list of what makes UNC the absolute place to be. Literally all the time. YGG, UNC!!
In honor of yet another great achievement in the UNC community, I decided to reach out to the student body (aka, future Nobel Prize winners) and see what they *fingers crossed* would like to be remembered for in the future. Here are a few of their responses:
If you could win a Nobel Prize for anything, what would it be and why?
Matt Lopez
First-year
Major: Economics and public policy
“I would win the Nobel Prize for Economics because in our globally integrated world, we need a new economic system to distribute the issues of global trade and climate change without curtailing the growth and opportunities for new countries as they become more entangled.”
Emma Macadam
First-year
Major: Elementary education
“If I could win a Nobel Prize for something, it would probably be along the lines of public school education in the United States. I love kids, and I think education is the root of most issues we have in our country. And if we better the elementary education system, it would help a lot of other issues.”
Amelia Barber
Sophomore
Major: Biology and environmental science
“If I would win an award, it would probably be for listening to music and going to concerts. For sure.”
Rachel Kleiman
Sophomore
School of Public Health applicant
“If I were to win a Nobel Peace Prize, I would win it for inventing a new color.”
Elinor Solnick
Sophomore
Major: Public policy
“I would invent a pill that lets you eat anything without getting fat.”
Spence Jorgensen
First-year
Major: Environmental science
“I would like to try and win the Nobel Peace Prize by creating a solution for the new immigrant crisis."
Maya Weinberg
First-year
Major: Latin American studies and geology
“I would create sustainable regulations and plans to ensure a future where there is less animal extinction in the Galapagos.”
