After an electrical accident in Dey Hall left a UNC employee injured and parts of campus in the dark, some students were lost in the confusion.
Staff writer Ashlen Renner asked students, “Where were you and what did you do when the power went out?”
Sophomore Lauren Casey got out of a recitation early because of the power outage.
“The strangest thing was I had to go to the bathroom really bad and I had to use the flashlight on my phone, but that was really not a bad problem in comparison to someone getting hurt. I kind of freaked out when I saw the ambulances and the helicopters circling campus.”
Campus minister Logan Canipe was in the Union.
“We actually just kept sitting there. There was a big window there so we had a lot of light and it didn’t really affect us.”
First-year Olivia Chao was in line at Wendy’s at the bottom of the Union.
“I was really hungry, and I wanted food, but then the power went out. I had to go to Rams.”
Junior Jonathan Lynn was on his way to the Campus Y to study when he saw the power was off. He then went to the Union where there was also no power. When he heard from a friend something had happened at Dey Hall, he abandoned this studies to investigate.
“We heard someone got shocked while working on some power lines at Dey Hall. We saw the EMT come out. I saw them wheel the guy out into the ambulance. I heard that he was alive, but he wasn’t going to make it, but then I saw his head was moving around, so I hope he’s going to be alright.”
