Top 10 UNC women graduates in honor of Women's History month

Given that March is Women’s History month, we want to make sure you can take some time to appreciate the women who have made history over the years.

But it’s especially cool to take a look at some of the notable #qweens who graduated from our very own UNC and went on to slay the game.

Who run the world? Carolina girls, of course:

Susie Marshall Sharp (Class of 1929)

In 1926, Sharp entered law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as the only woman in her class. She then went on to serve as the first female Superior Court judge in North Carolina in 1949 and the first female Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court in 1974.

Estelle Louise Fletcher (Class of 1957)

An American film and television actress, Fletcher won the Academy Award for Best Actress, BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her performance as Nurse Ratched in the 1975 film “One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.”

Patricia D. Horoho (Class of 1982)

Horoho is a retired United States Army lieutenant general and was the 43rd U.S. Army Surgeon General and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Medical Command. She was also the first female and first Nurse Corps Officer to hold these appointments.

Melody C. Barnes (Class of 1986)

After serving as Executive Vice President for Policy at the Center for American Progress, Barnes was chosen by President Barack Obama to serve as the Director of the Domestic Policy Council and served on the advisory board for his presidential transition team in 2008.

Sallie L. Krawcheck (Class of 1987)

Known as one of the most influential and experienced women on Wall Street, Krawcheck is the CEO and Co-Founder of Ellevest, owner and Chair of Ellevate Network and was formerly the president of the Global Wealth & Investment Management division of Bank of America.

Mia Hamm (Class of 1993)

A retired American professional soccer player, two time olympic gold medalist and FIFA Women's World Cup winner, Hamm helped the Tar Heels win four NCAA Women's Soccer championships in five years (sitting out the 1991 season only to concentrate on the FIFA Women’s World Cup in China).

Sylvia Crawley (Class of 1994)

A former professional women's basketball forward, licensed minister and motivational speaker, Crawley has served as the head women's basketball coach of the Boston College Eagles and as assistant coach with the Indiana Fever of the WNBA. Since 2015, Crawley has served as assistant coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels Women’s basketball team.

Tift Merritt (Class of 2000)

An American singer-songwriter and musician, Merritt has been compared to artists like Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris. Merritt has released five studio albums to date and has been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Country Album and several American Music Awards.

Lauren Brooke Baldwin (Class of 2001)

Baldwin graduated with a double bachelor's degree in journalism and Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2001. After joining CNN and HLN networks in 2008, Baldwin began anchoring her weekday afternoon segment “CNN Newsroom.”

Ashley Prange (Class of 2004)

In addition to being named NCAA First-Team All-American in 2004 and winning two Futures Tour events, Prange won the Golf Channel’s reality show “The Big Break V: Hawaii”in 2006. In 2007, she became a member of the LPGA Tour and now holds a coaching position at University of Central Florida.
