Who knew postcards of North Carolina could be so cool? I certainly didn’t. But, in doing research for this post, I discovered the UNC-CH digital collection of North Carolina postcards. The postcard pictured here inspired me to look into the history of our school’s fight song, “Hark the Sound”.

How would you feel if you opened up your geography textbook and found the following quote: “Many of the white settlers of this country suffered great cruelties from the Indians, who burned their houses, and murdered men, women, and children, as you see in the picture. This may be one of the more extreme examples of textbook evolution in North Carolina’s history, but I was shocked to see that it was widely circulated to young children in the late 1800’s!
The “dark horse” who improbably won the 1844 presidential race and propelled American expansionism to new levels amid the dream of “manifest destiny” celebrated his 216th birthday today. James K. Polk, an 1818 graduate of UNC and the 11th U.S. President, was born on this day in 1795.
Once again, UNC was ranked among the top universities across the country by an outside source. Of the top 50 U.S. colleges on Parchment.com’s list, UNC was ranked 24. But instead of a ranking system based on location, size or academics, the most recent ranking was derived from where students were accepted and chose to attend.

Ever ridden your bike on campus? It’s an awesome thing to do, and it’s a great way to exercise and get from place to place quickly. That is, of course, until you get where you’re going and can’t find a space on a bike rack. Then you probably have to wind up attaching your bike to a tree, lamp post, or the side of the UL, or even worse, stashing it in the bathroom of whatever class building you’re in. Try these simple rules of bike etiquette to make sure your bicycle experience on campus is as easy as possible.
As bands of bandana-clad students roam the campus armed with Nerf guns and socks, you might be curious about what they’re doing. These students are playing a tag-based game called Humans vs. Zombies. The weeklong game begins with three zombies tagging the humans playing the game, thus turning them into zombies.
Have you tried Challah? Pronounced “hall-uh”, this form of braided bread is a regular feature of Jewish Sabbath day meals and traditional holidays. The preparation of this bread begins with preparing the egg-based dough. Once the dough is prepared (It looks like a pretty involved process, but then again, I don’t have a lot of experience baking bread from scratch!) and before it is baked, it is braided into three parts. In doing a little bit of research, I learned that there are many, delicious-sounding variations on this recipe. For instance, chocolate chips are sometimes added in the braiding process. Or, in other, savory flavors, seasonings like sesame seeds or garlic powder are added after the bread is braided.
With all of this talk about being productive and getting work done, I have to be realistic and say that even with my best intentions I still procrastinate (a lot). I would go so far as to say I am an expert at procrastination.
Nerf guns, socks, bandanas, oh my! Yes, it is that time of the year again: Humans vs. Zombies. Humans Versus Zombies, or HvZ, is ultimately a game of tag with a more complex rule set and Nerf guns. Humans where bandanas around their arms, while zombies where bandanas around their heads. Oh, and did I mention that it lasts a week? Here’s a glimpse into my day as a zombie.
With the hundreds of clubs at UNC, Ek Taal is maybe one that missed your radar. Ek taal is a 12 beat rhythms used in Indian Classical music, and it is also the name of a club on campus that performs the ancient dance of Bharatanatyam.
The dining halls at UNC, as compared to other schools, are not that bad. There are usually several appetizing options and, thankfully, a general lack of mystery meat and strangely-colored mutant-looking side dishes. On October 23, 1953, University alumnus Andy Griffith spoke at the opening of a new addition to Venable Hall. Griffith, for the first time, presented his monologue “What it was, was football.” This monologue would be the one to make Griffith famous. During his monologue, Griffith portrays a country preacher who sees a football game, and in his complete naiveté is perplexed and confused by the game and its cultural phenomenon.
Mid-semester grades are up, fall break is over, and everyone is gearing up for one of the busiest times of year here at UNC. The time between fall break and final exams is one where everyone seems to have papers to write, grades to improve, and finals to prepare for, and not a lot of time to spare.
