After being suspended for this coming season due to academic reasons, North Carolina sophomore outfielder Brian Goodwin has decided to transfer to Miami Dade College, a community college in Miami, Fla., team spokesman Dave Schmidt confirmed Monday.
Though Goodwin would have had to wait until after his junior season at UNC to be eligible for the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, community college players can be drafted at any time. This means Goodwin would be eligible for the 2011 draft in June.
Goodwin would also be able to transfer back to a four-year school after completing the spring semester at Miami Dade, according to the NCAA transfer policy.
Goodwin started all 60 games for the Tar Heels last season as a freshman and posted a .409 on-base percentage with seven home runs and 63 RBIs.
