“Written in Stone”
What: Lecture
When: April 8, 12 p.m.
Where: UNC Health Science Library, room 527
Dr. Joe Pinkerton, will explain how Wilkes County tombstones tell the story of the 1918 flu epidemic. The lecture is hosted by the Bullitt History of Medicine Club, which seeks to explore the historical foundations of current medical knowledge and practice.
The Editor and the Dragon
What: Film Screening, discussion
When: April 11, 7 p.m.
Where: Carroll Hall, room 305
This documentary tells the story of Horace Carter, a newspaper editor in a small North Carolina town, and his fight against the Ku Klux Klan. Carter’s fearless reporting and bold editorials condemning the KKK earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Meritorious Public Service in 1953. After the screening, the Center for the Study of the American South and the Society of Professional Journalists will host a panel discussion from accomplished journalists moderated by UNC-Chapel Hill community journalism professor Jock Lauterer.
Old-time Square Dance
What: Dance
When: April 12, dancing starts at 8 p.m., beginner lessons at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Carrboro ArtsCenter
Pull on your boots and “rock the frolic” with the NC Squares. The string band Runs Good Needs Work and caller Ruth Pershing will lead this month’s old-time square dance. Beginners are welcome and partners are optional at this casual dance party.
