Deck the Halls: Tips for decorating your dorm for Christmas

DISCLAIMER: If you’re one of those people who thinks being #merry before being #thankful is NOT okay, then this post is probably going to enrage you.

As I’m writing this, I’m blaring Justin Bieber’s "Under The Mistletoe" and Kelly Clarkson’s "Wrapped In Red" (because I’m confident they are the best holiday albums to grace this earth) and getting WAY too excited for the holiday that’s coming in less than 38 days (I guess if you thought Thanksgiving or Black Friday, you’re not wrong).

But like, CHRIZMUZ.

If you’re like me, then the preparation for this season is honestly the most wonderful time of the year, and the best way to spread that Christmas cheer—other than singing loud for all to hear—is by decorating.

Here are some tips and dorm decor ideas to deck out YOUR hall this season, and hopefully make the countdown to winter break a little less miserable:

Christmas lights: The obligatory dorm room decor for any season, but especially for the holidays. Drape them around your bed, desk, closet, dresser, doorway, walls, ceiling, hallway, and bathroom for an extra cozy feel!

Paper snowflakes: Don’t know what to do with all those extra scantrons, but find yourself wanting to rip them to shreds? Check out this DIY tutorial on how to make paper snowflakes and start crafting! (Pro Tip: Leave all the extra paper clippings on floor—it’s just like snow!)

Wrap your door in holiday wrapping paper: Or better yet, remove your door altogether! Wrapping the entranceway will make you feel like you’re opening a present each time you come home! And no more wondering what time your roommate came back last night—you’ll know!

Get a Christmas tree for your suite/hall: Charlie Brown perfectly epitomized the college-budget Christmas tree — small, lowly, and probably just a branch that one of the campus squirrels knocked off. Take your pick!

Make a wreath: You can make this with literally anything — pencils, post-it notes, your shamefully large collection of Starbucks sleeves, or the wax paper you found in your pocket from four cookies ago — just have fun with it!

Window gel clings: These are a great way to spread the seasonal joy far beyond your humble abode. Any casual passerby would probably be very touched upon seeing the slightly disfigured face of Santa Claus right outside your window. I know I would.

Jingle bells: Love the holidays? Hate your roommate? If you answered with a resounding “YES” to either of those, invest in a large amount of sleigh bells. Hang them everywhere, turn then into a necklace, sow them into your shoes, and be aggressively merry. While they can get annoying very fast, your message of Christmas cheer certainly will not.
