Student fakes British accent to get peers to notice new earrings

Sophomore Amanda Birdsall is not from England. The public policy major hasn't even seen "Mary Poppins." But, you wouldn't have guessed that after hearing her today.

Birdsall faked a British accent while having lunch in Wendy's to get those around her to notice her new earrings.

"I got them on sale at Bevello and was really proud of them, but none of my friends said anything about it," Birdsall said.

Instead of being content that she could afford earrings from Bevello (even on sale, our sources tell us they are still quite expensive) and sitting down and stuffing her face with chicken nuggets and going on with her day, Birdsall started scheming to get the attention of those around her.

"I know that I always tend to pay attention more to someone or notice something about them if they have an accent," Birdsall said.

Junior psychology major Robin Garrity was present in the Wendy's when Birdsall started her charade.

"I heard a soft yet strong voice speaking on the phone behind me, but it didn't sound like English," Garrity said. "I turned and saw this British girl."

Garrity had no comment on Birdsall's jewelry, however.

"She was wearing earrings? Oh, that's cool I guess," Garrity said.

Birdsall was disappointed in the way her plan panned out as no one ended up asking her about her earrings.

"Maybe if I had gone with Australian or a Jerry Seinfeld impression, things would've been different," Birdsall said.
