Senior Darius Rucker says his backpack isn't small — it's fun sized.
Rucker, a music and political science double major, is an offensive tackle on the football team. If you aren't familiar with football positions, that means he is really big and gets to hit people really hard. Rucker is basically if Michael Oher could play a saxophone.
His large frame and imposing contrast greatly with his really small backpack.
A zebra striped JanSport most likely meant for a ten-year-old, it is the backpack of choice for the athlete.
"The athletics department gave us those really fancy Nike backpacks, but I don't know, it's just not my style," Rucker said.
Rucker's unique choice in backpack has not gone unnoticed by his friends and Carolina Athletics.
"It looks real funny, that tiny kid backpack on a huge guy like Darius," Rucker's friend and fellow footballer Josh Norman said. "But, hey, if he likes it I guess it's cool. We just get funny looks sometimes when we're together."
Rucker says his "fun sized" backpack is not just a style choice. It goes deeper than that.
"When I'm walking around campus, I want to be treated like a normal student. I don't want people to know I'm a football player," Rucker said.
He then stood to leave the interview and actually blocked out the sun with his gigantic frame.
