Charlotte native Carrie Patel was very excited when she was accepted into UNC. She was even more excited when she was approved as a member of the UNC-Chapel Hill Class of 2020 Facebook group.
"I took a screenshot of the approval notification and showed it to my parents," Patel said. "They congratulated me, but I don't think they understood just how important the approval was."
The approval was very important. It ensured that Patel could find out who would be joining her at UNC in the fall. She enjoyed reading her classmates' posts and would check in daily for updates. However, you can only read a person's roommate profile so many times before it becomes monotonous.
"It was fun learning that Brianna Trang's favorite TV shows are 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'American Pickers,' but reading got to be a little boring for me," Patel lamented. "It was time to shake things up."
Patel took the gigantic step out of the shadows of the Internet and liked a post in the group.
"Derrick Miller posted saying he was so excited to meet everyone on campus and I shared this sentiment, so I went a little crazy and liked the post," Patel said, wiping sweat off her brow thinking about the high-stake situation.
Patel was the first and only like on the post.
"It was a crazy spur-of-the-moment decision, but I decided I was ready for all of the Class of 2020 and whoever else might be in the group to know my name."
