Town council debates rezoning recommendations

At its Monday night meeting, the Chapel Hill Town Council spoke in support of rezoning recommendations developed by the Glen Lennox Area Neighborhood Conservation District Committee.

The proposed recommendations would create Neighborhood Conservation Districts for the single-family sections of the Glen Lennox neighborhood and help limit development in the area and preserve its family-oriented character.

The council will make a final decision at the Oct. 26 hearing.

Notable

The council also considered a proposal to close the Dawson Place right-of-way to allow for redevelopment of the property at 333 W. Rosemary St. for retail, commercial and residential purposes.

Owners of local businesses expressed a high level of concern regarding the proposal because the noise and inconvenience created by the construction might hurt their businesses. The council deferred its decision to a later date to obtain more information on the issue.

Quotable

“After spending a year with the committee, I saw it come together, then fall apart, then come together again,” said Council Member Penny Rich on the efforts of the Glen Lennox NCD Committee. “It wasn’t an easy task, and it took a lot of hard work.”

“When they start building, I can only expect big trucks and big noise,” said Jamil Kadoura, owner of Mediterranean Deli, on the proposed redevelopment on West Rosemary Street. “Please do not allow this to happen. How is my business going to deal with this?”
