More voters than expected cast their ballots at the Booker Creek precinct poll as of 8:40 a.m., officials said.
Forty-two residents had voted at the precinct, according to election officials.
Voters cast their ballots for mayor, town council candidates, school board officials and voted on the quarter-cent sales tax increase referendum.
David Eiland, chief judge of the precinct, said though he expects a decline in voters later in the day, he has been surprised at the number of people who voted so far.
“There’s been more people earlier,” he said. “It’s been a real mix of students on up to retirees.”
