St. John Precinct turnout meets expectations — younger voters are sparse

Craig Ashton, a Chapel Hill resident, said the fact that his grand-daughter just began school caused him to come out and vote at the St. John Precinct.

Ashton said he supports the quarter-cent sales tax due to its proposed benefits to local schools.

“I want to make sure (my granddaughter) has good schools to go to,” Ashton said.

According to voting officials at McDougle Middle School, the voting location for the St. John Precinct, voting numbers there are up to par with expectations.

As of 12:10 p.m., 153 people had voted at the location today, on top of the 147 votes that came during the early voting weeks, according to chief judge Sue Pearce.

“We are right about at our expectations,” Pearce said.

There has been a waning turnout as the day has worn on, she said.

“It’s slowed down a bit. There was a little rush as people go to work,” Pearce said. “I imagine more voters this evening as people get out of work, though,” she said.

The typical demographic seen has been middle-aged and older adults, with few to no student voters, Pearce said.

“Most of our voters have been in St. Johns for decades and decades,” she said.
