Carrboro reviews a green agenda

At a Tuesday night meeting, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen heard a presentation on the status of conservation easements at the proposed Carolina North site.

The property, which spans 947 acres across Chapel Hill and Carrboro, is expected to generate up to 3 million square feet for mixed-use campus activities.

Carolina North is planned to take more than 133 acres of the overall area.

The board approved changes to the lines of the conservation areas, but did not change the area’s acreage. The changes were made to preserve areas with higher ecological value that were ignored when the original lines were drawn.

Some of the characteristics protected would be parts of a stream, wetland, buffers and flood plains.

After the slight adjustments the board passed the resolution unanimously.

Noted

The Board approved an agreement with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to extend the construction of the Elm Street Sidewalk Project to Dec. 31, 2012.

The Board also approved an amendment to the 2011-2012 budget to provide $7,555 to the Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department to help allow the town install life saving fire sprinkler systems in major facilities.

The Board approved a resolution to start the process of installing a solar energy panel at the Carrboro Commons location. The panel will provide a staple and commitment of the town to use renewable energy.

Quotable

“We are leading by example with this new renewable energy project,” said Randy Dodd, director for environmental planning, about the solar panel resolution.

“This is an example and an opportunity for us to look into thinking about green capital investment…it could serve to measure how we’re doing in wanting to mitigate greenhouse gases,” said Carrboro Aldermen Sammy Slade on the solar panel resolution.
