They would like it to have open spaces with comfy couches. A cafe offering local coffee would be nice. Someone even asked for cats to be lounging in the windows.
But books are definitely a must at the proposed Orange County Public Library Southern Branch location.
About 50 residents attended a public input session on the proposed county library Tuesday at Carrboro's Hickory Tavern.
After months of discussion, the county moved forward with its proposed library on Brewer Lane in Carrboro. The proposed location would sit adjacent to the 300 East Main development.
The residents were given the chance to discuss the proposed location and the amenities they would like the library to offer.
Lucinda Munger, the library director at the Orange County Public Library in Hillsborough, said she wasn't surprised by anything she heard.
"It shows really just how much people value libraries," Munger said. "(These residents) want to lend their voice to something they'll visit hopefully everyday."
The residents gathered in groups of five to discuss pictures of different library and study spaces.
Those present seem to particularly like the traditional library setting, with comfortable couches and stacks of books. Many residents voiced concern for the pictures of clean, open spaces with no books in site.
The new location will replace the Cybrary in Carrboro's Century Center and the library in McDougle Middle School.
Residents said they worried about the lack of visibility the Brewer Lane location might offer, but with proper signage, they're hoping that could be remedied.
The crowd was excited about the site's parking availability and it's proximity to the Carrboro ArtsCenter.
The next public input session on the Southern Branch of the Orange County Public Library will be held on April 12 at 12 p.m. in the Carrboro Town Hall.
