Every day this week, the Chapel Hill Public Library will debut a trading card, designed by a local artist to feature a banned book, as a part of Banned Books Week. This week celebrates the freedom to read nationwide.
Monday's book is "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck.
Reason for banning: Steinbeck's classic has been banned in American classrooms for profanity and sexual references. In 1973, Turkey declared that the book spread socialist propaganda.
Artist: Colleen Barclay
Artist's Statement: In Kern, California, where the story ends, authorities banned and burned this book in 1939. Today, the county remains impoverished, with the California dream still out of reach for many.
You can pick up a copy of these trading cards at six locations on and around UNC's campus.
