As always, with the primary election just around the corner, presidential hopefuls swarm to the media in hopes of more airtime, but this election, the candidates are swarming to … make fun of themselves?????
Weird. But, sure enough, candidate after candidate appears on comedy talk shows in hopes of advocating their platform, but, more importantly, going viral.
So what’s the trick?
Here lies the master list: what to do as a political candidate trying to Make It Big & Go Viral on a talk show:
Reference your platform with catchy phrases like “women’s rights,” “income inequality,” and “Build a Wall!” Having a signature catchphrase never hurts; see Bob the Builder (“We can fix it!”), Stephanie Tanner (“How rude!”), and Homer Simpson (“D’oh!”)
Impersonate Donald Trump. Make fun of Donald Trump. Talk about Donald Trump. Talk about his hair. Both Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton attempted Trump impressions on a late night show last week. Taking it a step further, Hillary Clinton made Jimmy Fallon touch her hair in an attempt to challenge Donald Trump to expose the truth about whatever divine being he puts on his head every morning.
Use puns!! On Late Night with Stephen Colbert, Bernie Sanders so generously gave Colbert a mug with the catchphrase “Feel the Bern.” Puns like these will not only help viewers remember your name, but it will give them great Halloween costume ideas. Any and every American voter will be inspired to dress up as a “Bern” victim, “Chill”ary Clinton, or even “Bark”-o Rubio!
Make fun of yourself before comedians do first. Or, rather, after comedians already did it first. Trump heeds this advice as he faced his own impersonator head-on in a self-deprecating interview with himself (Jimmy Fallon) wherein Fallon’s wig looked more realistic than Trump’s actual hair.
Give the younger generation fashion advice!! On The Ellen Degeneres Show, during an interview with Hillary Clinton, Ellen gave young Clinton supporter, Macey Hensley, a brand-new, miniature pantsuit!! Experts describe the garment as “student council chic” and “the ultimate bully magnet.”
