Duke community still shaken by finding of noose on campus

Students at Duke University remain shaken by the finding of a noose made of a thin yellow rope on campus last week. And it hit particularly hard given that it has been just two weeks since drunken white male students chanted a racist song that alluded to lynching at a black female student.


ICYMI: Ted Cruz rehearses kissing his wife before presidential announcement

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, officially announced his candidacy for the 2016 presidential race at Liberty University last week — and he remains the only major candidate to have officially declared a run. Cruz was a big subject on social media and news organizations throughout last week, but not just for his announcement or his policies — but for what many believed was him rehearsing kissing his wife before the big announcement at the university last week.

Amtrak releases comically redacted customer complaints

Last June, a user on the public records site, MuckRock, requested consumer complaints from the publicly funded train company, Amtrak. But after nine months of waiting, Conor Skelding received 317 pages of complaints so heavily redacted, they make declassified military documents seem transparent.


NC House bill clarifies that sex between lobbyists, officials is conflict of interest

North Carolina lawmakers don't seem to be happy about a memo released in February talking about sexual relations between lobbyists and government officials that received significant media attention. A month after the N.C. Ethics Committee ruled that sex between a lobbyist and an official is not considered a gift and doesn’t have to be disclosed, members of the N.C. House of Representatives have filed an opposing bill.


Barbara Mikulski, longest serving woman in Congress, to retire after four-decade career

Barbara Mikulski — the longest serving female member in the history of Congress — announced on Monday that she will not be running for a sixth consecutive term. Mikulski is a Democratic senator from Maryland who has fought consistently for bipartisan compromise, for women's issues and for women lawmakers since she first gained the seat in 1988. She served in the House of Representatives for a dozen years before then.


NC senator makes BuzzFeed when he spends snow day at legislature

Democratic lawmakers in North Carolina have been in the minority for the past four years — so when one Democrat from Charlotte apparently had the legislature to himself during Tuesday's snow, he got right to work. Jeff Jackson, D-Mecklenburg, documented his day at the General Assembly on his Facebook page, starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, using the hashtag #JustOneLegislator.


North Carolina's export economy replacing long lost textile jobs

The growing export industry in North Carolina is beginning to replace the economic gap that was left when the textile industry collapsed and moved largely overseas. Joey Fink, a Ph.D candidate in history at UNC explained the long history of textiles in North Carolina, and the impact the industry had on the shaping of North Carolina history.
