Vigil held for victims of Russian aggression against Ukraine

On Feb. 25, 2022 community members attended a vigil for victims of Russian aggression against Ukraine held by the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages in Polk Place outside of Dey Hall. Associate Professor of Russian and the Russian Program Director, Stanislav Shvabrin, gave the opening remarks and then allowed other community members to speak their thoughts on the subject.

Orange County hosts Veterans Day Celebration

On Nov. 11, the Town of Chapel Hill hosted the Orange County Veterans Day Celebration to honor veterans who have served in the United States military. The event took place at the Southern Human Services Campus and was free and open to the public.  “Millions have served...they were key and essential to the formation of service forces that enabled the United States of America to defend and protect our citizens and interests,” Retired Master Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, Lee Heavlin, said in an email. “Many never made it home. Maybe that fact bears hard on all veterans and motivates us to get involved, help others and become active in our communities.”

Tar Heels celebrate the 2021 Carolina Basketball Late Night

The annual Carolina Basketball Late Night celebration, a tipoff to the 2021-22 season, took place at the UNC Dean E. Smith Center on Oct. 15. Hosted by entertainer and radio host Brian “B Daht” McLaughlin, the event was Hubert Davis’ first Late Night as head coach of the North Carolina men’s basketball team. Festivities included a dance performance by the Carolina Girls, a 3-pointer competition and two scrimmages with the women’s and men’s basketball teams.

Tar Heels fall to Seminoles 35-25

UNC football fell to Florida State 35-25 on Saturday afternoon in a home matchup at Kenan Stadium. The Tar Heels were up 10-0 until a Seminole interception that gave FSU the energy it needed to push toward a win.
