Shirley Ort and Fred Clark are the founders and directors of the Carolina Covenant financial aid program. Ort is in charge of the university's financial aid department and Clark is a professor who has been teaching here for 47 years (teaches classes on Brazilian studies). The Carolina Covenant program was founded ten years ago and is a need-based program that covers all school-related costs for the students it serves, including the cost of living. It has improved UNC's diversity and has served as a model for other financial aid programs around the country (however, Shirley pointed out that ours has been the most successful because many other schools who have tried it have dropped the program because it is so expensive).
