Anew coalition of local and state-level elected officials in North Carolina has been established explicitly to work on issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. As the group, named N.C. Electeds for Equality, is forming, it must fight LGBT-oppressive legislation while expanding its membership. UNC Interpersonal Violence Prevention Coordinator Bob Pleasants has a few specific ideas the group should keep in mind as it develops.

Universities throughout the country are recognizing multiple gender identities and sexual orientations on their admissions applications, allowing potential students more gender identity options. UNC has an opportunity to be on the right side of history in this movement by adapting similar practices.
The benefit of including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer gender identity options on university applications is twofold.

CORRECTION: Due to a reporting error, a previous version of the story stated that Student Congress debated a provision of an amendment which would require the Director of External and State Affairs to stay in Chapel Hill during the summer. This topic was briefly discussed at the meeting but there was never a formal amendment provision presented.An amendment presented by Austin Root which would require the position to maintain their duties over the summer and remain liable to the Instrument of Student Judicial Governance passed.
