Riley Reid, known professionally as “Riley and the Starlights,” is a UNC alumnus with a success story straight out of the movies. Though he now lives in New York, his return to Chapel Hill is just around the corner. On Jan. 31, Reid will debut his latest short film/music video at the Argyle Film Festival in the Varsity Theatre.

On March 25, 2017, I was sitting on UNC Asheville’s quad with my friends. We were eighth graders, on campus for our Science Olympiad competition and killing time between events. I don’t remember what tests I took or rockets I launched or medals I did or didn’t earn. I do, however, remember one thing: Jake McKelvie.

Musician, family-centric and Carrboro native are all things that encompass the character of Elizabeth Cotten. The Grammy Award-winning artist was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. To commemorate Cotten’s lasting legacy, on Sunday the Town of Carrboro held the Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten Day Celebration at the Carrboro Century Center.

On Nov. 23, the Carolina Bluegrass Band had its fall semester concert to unveil the music they have been working on for the past few months. The band, comprised of 17 members, is split into three smaller ensembles. Each ensemble consists of traditional bluegrass instruments such as acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle and mandolin.

The Grammy award-winning initiative, led by acclaimed artist Rhiannon Giddens, is renowned for bringing together artists from different global perspectives. Tyler Gregory Okonma, the alternative hip-hop artist known as Tyler, The Creator, released his eighth studio album “CHROMAKOPIA” on Oct. 28. This album is an advancement of the “Tyler sound” fans like myself love, but his heart-wrenching composition and vulnerable lyrics prove the artist's maturity and his strong sense of self.
