Yunseo Chung, a 21-year-old Columbia University student, was born in South Korea. She came to the U.S. at 7-years-old and legally obtained a permanent residency. In early March, the U.S. government threatened her with deportation. Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate student, is currently imprisoned at an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement facility in Louisiana. He was detained on March 8 and has been fighting unlawful deportation since.

UNC-Chapel Hill’s 106th Undergraduate Senate met for the last time on March 18, passing a bill that increased stipends for incoming Student Government leaders. There are eight stipended positions, including student body president, vice president and treasurer, with some receiving up to a $1,800 increase in their annual stipends.

Graduate student Mahmoud Khalil was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on March 8 after leading pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Columbia University. Despite being a legal permanent U.S. resident on a green card and not being charged with a crime, Khalil was taken to a detention center in Louisiana and faces the possibility of deportation.
