By the time my parents were born in the late 1970s, the fascist dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet had closed its fist around every part of Chile — from the military, to the judicial system, to every level of education. Pinochet had come into power in a violent coup d’etat on Sept. 11, 1973, that overthrew the democratically elected President Salvador Allende and was executed with the explicit approval and support of U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and President Richard Nixon. Within a day, troops had swept through the University of Santiago where they arrested hundreds of students and professors — some of whom were never seen again.

Dance has always been an essential part of my life — the axis everything else revolved around. Rehearsals took up weeknights and Saturdays through middle and high school, and were the sites of my closest friendships. I sometimes struggled to deal with the demands dance brought on, with long hours and problematic physical expectations weighed against the joys of a great performance.

Bhangra Elite, widely known around UNC's campus for their high-impact routines and explosive energy on stage, is a pinnacle part of the University's dance scene. Established in 1996, the group spreads the joy of bhangra, a dance form originating from the Punjab region in Northern India, to Chapel Hill and surrounding communities. Simran Arora, Gurnoor Grewal and Anjali Nelatoor, who are sophomores, and freshman Vraj Hingoo are all members of the team. This year, Bhangra Elite has 29 dancers in total.
