Butch Davis

Butch Davis came to UNC in 2006 after being named the head coach in November, midway through the 2006 season. He was fired at the end of July 2011 in connection with the ongoing NCAA investigation.

Chancellor Holden Thorp said in a release that Davis was not dismissed as a result of a specific charge in the investigation, but because the probe had begun to “chip away at this University’s reputation.”

Davis was replaced by defensive coordinator Everett Withers on an interim basis.

Many, including The DTH's editorial board, called for Davis' firing in the wake of numerous NCAA violations discovered during the summer and early fall of 2010. Chancellor Thorp and Athletic Director Dick Baddour had repeatedly expressed confidence in Davis.

Davis came to North Carolina sporting an impressive resume of coaching in both collegiate and pro ranks. Davis was the head coach at both the University of Miami (1995-2000) and the Cleveland Browns (2001-2004). At Miami, he compiled a record of 51-20 in six seasons, including five bowl appearances, before taking the head coaching position at Cleveland, where he went 25-39 through four seasons.
