Development marches on: With few stimulus dollars and a down economy, downtown Chapel Hill has shown sound growth

|

Chapel Hill residents may think the town is hindered without economic stimulus funds for job growth. But if plans for growth and initiatives by town leaders continue, we won’t need them. The town did get some stimulus money, like the funds that paid for pedestrian refuges on MLK. But the university environment and Research Triangle Park have insulated the area from worse job losses.

Integrative medicine is the future

Drugs. We all use them — whether recreationally or to treat medical problems. And the thing is, we use them too often. When you are choosing a treatment for a medical problem, there are better treatment options for you than prescription drugs.

Beyond counting minorities: Thoughts on diversity in response to the 2009-10 Report

|

It is easy, as we count the increases in underrepresented groups at UNC, to lose sight of why we “do” diversity. The stats are useful, but can’t measure success by themselves. Let’s consider the 2009-10 Diversity Plan Report, from the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. It addresses diversity at UNC during the past year, especially as it relates to underrepresented groups by race, gender and sexual orientation. There are highlights from the data.

Hi, my name is Hinson Neville, and I’m a freshman prospective business major from Roanoke Rapids, N.C. living in Granville Towers — and if I have to give this spiel one more time, I just might vomit.

Carolina North going South: Annual report reveals unacceptably stagnant development on a vital project for UNC's future

|

The release of the first Annual Report of the Carolina North Development Agreement last week revealed that progress on the new campus has been sluggish and is showing few, if any, signs of accelerating. Though the current state of the economy is a reasonable obstacle, it is still crucial for the state and university to push forward on construction of Carolina North in order for UNC to remain competitive on both a national and global level.

UNC housekeeper break policy unfair to employees

|

We are writing to express our disagreement with the DTH editorial (“Break busts legitimate,” Aug. 31) that stated, “the break policy for housekeepers is reasonable and humane.” We are even more disturbed that University officials have failed to condemn a policy that treats housekeepers like children, demanding that they ask permission from supervisors to sit down when needed.

Students left out to dry: Housing department should be better prepared for emergencies that force students out of dorms

|

Amid the wake of turbulent flood waters in a mid-campus residence hall last week, the Department of Housing and Residential Education showed a glaring weakness by leaving some students without clear direction. The department needs to do more to prepare and implement contingency plans for emergency situations in the future, so students can know what they are expected to do.

Medical students need more sex

|

It’s true. I asked them. Well, not really. But Dr. Alan Shindel of UCSF did, in last month’s Academic Medicine. He asked more than 2,000 U.S. and Canadian medical students two questions: 1. How’s your sex life? and 2. Are you comfortable dealing with patients’ sexual issues?

Football players need to honor Carolina tradition

|

Down 13 starters, seven on one of the top ranked defenses in the nation, and they still came within six yards and seven points of beating former BCS champion and 7.5 point favorite LSU! I am very proud of my fellow Tar Heels that made the trip to Atlanta, especially T.J. Yates, who stepped up and delivered.
