Academic Integrity Committe Created to Address Cheating in Local Schools

Local teachers and administrators are trying to address academic integrity within Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. East Chapel Hill High School has begun a program with Duke University's Center for Academic Integrity at the Kenan Institute for Ethics to analyze cheating and unethical behavior within the school. Betsy Dawson, a Latin teacher at ECHHS, initiated the Academic Integrity Committee last November after witnessing some cases within her own classroom. The first action of the committee was to revise the honor code of ECHHS.

OWASA Votes Not to Raise Water Rates

The board of directors of the Orange Water and Sewer Authority voted Thursday not to raise rates for the 2002-03 fiscal year. A temporary increase in rates, fees and charges was considered to counteract the budget deficit that could potentially occur as a result of the drought the area suffered. "We had anticipated continuing water restrictions," said Judith Weseman, secretary-treasurer of the board. "We have to maintain a certain ratio of revenue to debt or potentially risk having bond rates worsened and costs being raised.

Orange County Honors Volunteers

Orange County held a reception Wednesday to honor its volunteers and identify the North Carolina Outstanding Volunteer Award recipients. The annual recognition reception was sponsored by the Orange County Board of Commissioner, Orange County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and Volunteer Orange. Each year agencies with focuses on volunteer programs nominate individuals and programs to be recognized as Orange County Key Volunteers.

Oasis, Inside Scoop Join Forces on Franklin Street

Two of Chapel Hill's hometown businesses are planning a unique integration at a Franklin Street location. Oasis Cafe & Deli and The Inside Scoop will merge their efforts to secure a Franklin Street location for the ice cream shop. Robert Humphreys, executive director of the Chapel Hill Downtown Commission, said he is excited about the renovations to Oasis Cafe, located at 153 E. Franklin St. He said the main reason for the renovations was The Inside Scoop's search for a Franklin Street location.

Carrboro Adopts Recycling Ordinance

The Carrboro Board of Aldermen unanimously voted Tuesday to adopt the Orange County recycling ordinance, a plan to eliminate the dumping of reusable waste. This plan is directed toward construction and demolition companies, which often discard many building materials after project completion. It also will restrict the burning of solid waste. The ordinance will go into effect Oct. 1, but Orange County will continue to solicit the support of other towns after it goes into effect.
