Technology sought to connect groups

Widescreen TVs, graphic design services and a Web-based scheduling system are some of the technological upgrades connecting students with one another in the Student Union. "We know we need to improve information about what's happening in the building," Carolina Union Director Don Luse said. "So we're using technology instead of just signs." The installation of a plasma-screen TV and two smaller monitors displaying event schedules in the Union are part of a continued effort to increase student access to campus information.

Campus groups push holiday ride-sharing

For some students, getting home for the holidays can be a challenge. "It's hard to find a ride as a freshman, I remember that," junior Stephanie Berman said. Berman is an out-of-state student who participates in the Out-of-State Student Association's ride board. The OSSA ride board, which can be found at ossa.unc.edu, is an online message board that allows students either to search for a lift home with other students or to offer a spare seat in their own car.

It's a question with several answers, and experts say it largely depends on individual preferences. Campus Health Services psychologist Glen Martin said three elements should be present in any place of study. "It needs to be fairly quiet and free from distractions, comfortable but not too comfortable," he said. Martin said the rest is up to the student.

Schools reward faculty work

Officials in UNC's School of Pharmacy and School of Medicine say sometimes faculty members need an old-fashioned pat on the back. Both are using internal teaching and research awards to reward their faculty members for good work in the classroom and the lab. The pharmacy school's award program, which is two years old, handed out about 30 awards earlier this year ranging from $500 to $15,000. About 10 of these awards went to faculty who showed excellence in teaching and research, said Robert Blouin, pharmacy school dean.
