Plant a tree and make a friend. Earth Day is an appreciation for the planet we all share together. From planting flowers to being activists for the global climate change, UNC students are sharing what Earth Day means to them.
Steep Canyon Rangers, a Grammy Award-winning bluegrass band based in Asheville, started as a group of friends at UNC during the 1990s. The band recently produced an album on its own, and the experience went so well that the members plan to do so again in the future.
“It's hard to find someone who cuts hair good, so to find someone who is a friend, a confidante and an amazing barber, it’s like she’s everything in one,” Means said.
“I didn't really know what to expect at all, but the storytelling and the acting was just all really well put together and I could almost visualize what was going on,” social media intern for OdysseyStage Eloise Rich said.
“It gives you a different perspective,” book club member Roger Goldstein said. “And all of a sudden you think, 'You know that was worth reading,' because of the discussion.”
This was the first visiting lecture of the semester and the Department of Art and Art History plan to host more throughout the year. Enriched in history, the Art Department’s Visiting Artist Series hopes to get master's of fine arts students thinking about how can art be reflected through different mediums.
“I love that this will be sort of correcting a preconceived notion that it was the Europeans to set up trade when in reality, there had been trade, very organized trade, for hundreds and hundreds of years right through this area,” Day said.
