Gas costs may lead to pricey transit contracts

Gas prices in the area have increased $.25 since February, leaving some residents feeling helpless and some government services challenged.According to GasBuddy.com, gas prices in the Durham area have jumped from $3.32 to $3.57 from Feb. 25 to March 28.

Judicial District Executive Council to discuss court issues

Orange and Chatham counties are working to improve communications between court offices through a new judicial council. The two counties formed the Judicial District Executive Council, composed of six representatives from judicial offices in each county, to make policy changes and improve collaboration.

Republicans open Hillsborough office to increase visibility

After seeing a larger turnout in the November elections, the Republican party has opened up a permanent office in Orange County. In order to strengthen its presence in the area, the party will use its new Hillsborough office — located at 347 Ja-Max Drive — to provide voters with easy-to-access information.

County sales tax back on the table

Town officials are discussing reintroducing the quarter-cent sales tax, which failed on last November’s ballot.The revenue from the sales tax would likely go to education and fostering economic development, alleviating the impact of state budget cuts.

Hillsborough food center opening delayed

Hillsborough’s new food processing center’s opening date has been pushed back to April, with more than half the construction left to be done. The Piedmont Food & Agricultural Processing Center, which broke ground in October, will not open in March as previously anticipated.

Town Council to alter Comprehensive Plan

On the eve of President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address, Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt opened Monday night’s Chapel Hill Town Council meeting with an address of his own. “Chapel Hill faces many challenging, difficult decisions,” Kleinschmidt said in his State of the Town speech.

Chapel Hill police crack down on serving to minors

Chapel Hill police have started cracking down on bartenders who sell alcohol to underage customers since the beginning of the year. To help educate bartenders, Timmons and Officer Samantha Williams held a meeting Thursday open to the public about the laws regarding selling alcohol and what to look for in validating someone’s driver’s license.

Carolina Brewery expanding its reach

Beer enthusiasts across the state can rejoice as the local brewery expands its distribution, which will now span from the Outer Banks to the Piedmont. Carolina Brewery has signed four distribution deals in the past year for the craft beers it’s been making since 1995.

Missing Chapel Hill teen search continues

The last time Walter Morrow saw his 14-year-old daughter, Rosa, she was sitting on the couch waiting to go out with friends. That was Oct. 22, and he hasn’t seen her since. Morrow said he realized Rosa was gone around 10:30 p.m. after he woke up from a nap and assumed she went out to meet friends on Franklin Street. She had a 1 a.m. curfew.
