The Downtown Chapel Hill Partnership launched “Save The Music” last year, and is giving local artists a platform to perform outside of businesses on Franklin Street. This past week, Pajama Day, Wake Moody and Dan Kelo all performed for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community, showcasing their unique and diverse styles of music.
“It kind of just gets me out of the work mode, it’s something that I can just pick up and just do something creative and not be focused too much on — it's just something relaxing that I like to do,” she said.
“It allows Black children to start to imagine, it allows Black children to start to dream, especially at that young age, where imagination is a huge part of identity development,” student Jamirious Mooney said.
“Given I never went to college and then just thinking about the fact that my daughter is not only in college, but is about to graduate is just something amazing,” Oczaveus X, father of a UNC student, said. “I learned a lot that day, even though I didn’t know anything her professor was saying,” he added with a smile.
This Black History Month, students consider the erasure of Black history lessons in schools. “When I think about the way that African American history is cramped and restricted to a few figures and those figures, in turn, are often sanitized, they’re reduced to a few selected stories to represent their lives," UNC professor Glenn Hinson said.
