Planning Board cites need for stricter shelter guidelines

The Chapel Hill Planning Board expressed concerns regarding the specificity of guidelines for shelter development at Tuesday night’s meeting. Planning board member George Cianciolo said the guidelines presented by the board’s shelter subcommittee should ensure that residents’ fears and concerns are recognized.

'Repeat Robber' of banks arrested in Wake County

The man dubbed the “Repeat Robber” of banks by the FBI was arrested Monday and charged with five counts of common law robbery, according to a Raleigh Police Department news release. Raleigh and Durham police arrested Lee Bennett Pope III, 37, on an outstanding violation warrant in a shopping center parking lot in Durham before Raleigh detectives assumed custody and transported him to Raleigh, the news release states.

Two Orange County banks robbed

Investigators are looking into the robberies of two Orange County banks, and officials say it is too early to tell if they are related. Around noon Tuesday, a white man in his late 40s or early 50s entered the CommunityOne Bank at 102 Millstone Drive in Hillsborough and robbed it in front of five or six witnesses, said Hillsborough’s Interim Police Chief Davis Trimmer. “He walked up to the tellers and told them this was a robbery,” he said.

A customer approached the counter at Starbucks and showed her engagement ring to the woman at the cash register. The response was an exclamation, a rush around the counter and a hug.That’s just normal human relations for Stefany Picquet, who works at the Starbucks on East Franklin Street.

NIT win could boost Franklin St. sales

UNC students haven’t had a reason to rush Franklin Street or buy much memorabilia this basketball season.But with the possibility of winning the National Invitation Tournament on Thursday, they might get their shot.The Chapel Hill Police Department said it is expecting a storm of students and has already made plans to place officers downtown and to close Franklin Street.
