Lacrosse knocks off No. 1 Northwestern

In the quarterfinals of last year's NCAA Tournament, Northwestern began holding onto the ball in the second half, limiting North Carolina's possessions and allowing the eventual national champions to control the tempo and claim the victory. The North Carolina women's lacrosse team faced a similar situation in Saturday's season opener, but UNC was prepared this time, securing a dramatic double-overtime victory, 9-8. "We made the mistake (of not applying pressure) last year," head coach Jenny Levy said. "Good coaches hopefully don't make mistakes two times in a row."

Wrestling sweeps two at home

Coming off a win against Virginia the night before, the UNC wrestling team faced Virginia Tech on Saturday in Carmichael Auditorium and won 25-15 in its final home meet of the season. Redshirt sophomore Vincent Ramirez was first up in the 149-pound weight class. Ramirez had been suffering from a stomach illness since Thursday, but it didn't prevent him from wrestling. "I tried to hydrate, get some sleep, and I came back and I felt a lot better this morning," Ramirez said.

Fighting against the odds for big ten victory

Although North Carolina fans will be focused on the football game with N.C. State and the first home basketball game of the regular season on Saturday, the wrestling team has a very important weekend as well. Three Big Ten schools - Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin - will be competing against North Carolina, N.C. State and Virginia in the ACC/Big Ten Clash. The Big Ten has long been the powerhouse conference in wrestling, but UNC coach C.D. Mock is looking to build off the team's impressive performance last week at the Michigan State Open.

Wrestlers to begin season at Michigan St.

The North Carolina wrestling team will start its season this weekend at the Michigan State Open in East Lansing. The first match of the season will be more about measuring individual skills than landing a victory. The event is "important only to the extent that they make a lot of mistakes and learn from (them). It's part of just seeing where we are, and where we're making mistakes and what we need to fix," Coach C.D. Mock said. Not all Tar Heel wrestlers will participate in the meet, as many on the team have injuries.

Track outdoors starts in Raleigh

Much like the squirrels coming out of hibernation around campus, the North Carolina track and field team is coming out of the Eddie Smith Field House today and Saturday for its second outdoor meet of the outdoor season. Head coach Dennis Craddock said he will take a more relaxed approach to evaluate the young talent on his team and help them gain experience during this weekend's Raleigh Relays. The meet will also be an opportunity for the athletes who have been competing all year to rest.

UNC Track competing in NCAA Championships

Today and Saturday, North Carolina will attend the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. UNC has six individual athletes competing as well as the women's distance medley relay team. The athletes competing on the men's team include standouts Nick Owens and Vikas Gowda. Owens will compete in the weight throw and Gowda in the shot put. Georgia Kloss, Sheena Gordon, Megan Kaltenbach and 2004 Olympian Laura Gerraughty will represent the women's team. "When you get to this point, nothing matters of how you've done all year long," said Coach Dennis Craddock.
