Everybody stand up

Against a black brick backdrop, an octet of stand-up comics delivered a mix of topical humor, stand-alone zingers and ironic impressions to giggling audience members. College students and novice comedians proffered their quirky take on reality along with dapper-dressed, silver-haired jokesters in Thursday's sets, which ranged from four to 15 minutes on Thursday at the Dirty South Improv Comedy Theater in Carrboro.

DSI stage to host stand-up showcase

Dirty South Improv will host a night of stand-up comedy by both seasoned jokesters and amateurs from the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area tonight. Zach Ward, DSI's executive producer, said the humor showcased is more geared toward quirky and idiosyncratic observation than merely slathering audiences with instances of the shocking or crude. Headliner John Loftin, winner of the 2008 award for Carolina's Funniest Comic, said he believes original interpretations of common situations are what make for successful comedy.

'Weaver Street' at ArtsCenter

A series of short plays slated for this weekend intends to hold a mirror up to local society and illustrate the idea of Carrboro's Weaver Street as a cultural phenomenon. Local theater collective The Roundtable will present "It Happened at Weaver Street," at 7 p.m. Sunday at the ArtsCenter. Now in its fifth year, Roundtable's focus has shifted to local culture, specifically Carrboro, which is referred to tongue-in-cheek by some locals as "The Paris of the Piedmont."
