Mayors Address Transportation Woes

The population growth in the Triangle is causing problems with transportation, and four area mayors are doing their part to address the situation.At an Assembly of Governments meeting in Chapel Hill on Thursday, Cary Mayor Glen Lang presented the Regional Transportation Strategy for the Research Triangle Region of North Carolina.Lang presented the strategy on behalf of Durham Mayor Nick Tennyson, Raleigh Mayor Paul Coble, Chapel Hill Mayor Rosemary Waldorf and himself.

Fools' Day Kicks Off Festival

Bands, costumes and a clown will be on hand to entertain children of all ages during Sunday's April Fools' Day Bash, an event set to jump-start the second annual Art Springs to Life Festival.The April Fools' Day Bash, slated to begin at 1 p.m. and last until 4 p.m., will take place in front of the Franklin Street post office. The entire festival, which will be held in the post office's courtyard area, will be sponsored by the Chapel Hill Downtown Commission.This is the first year that an April Fools' Day Bash will kick off the festival.

Chapel Hill Police Ready for Revelers

With the much-anticipated rematch of the two top teams in the ACC only two days away, local law enforcement officials are preparing for the postgame celebrations on Franklin Street.After North Carolina's victory over Duke on Feb. 1, the 100 block of Franklin Street was swamped with UNC fans, who started unauthorized bonfires and participated in vandalism, forcing officials to review their procedures for handling the revelers this weekend.During the last celebration, an overturned car prompted questions about whether more can be done to ensure safety.

Officials Hesitant About Fare-Free Busing

Some local officials have voiced reservations about how fare-free transit will be financed in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.On Feb. 13, students overwhelmingly supported a referendum 3,882 to 1,576 that would make all Chapel Hill Transit Authority buses fare-free.
