New Award Gives Whiteville Students Chance to Succeed

The family of a former top executive has created a scholarship to put a UNC education within the reach of Whiteville students. Recently, the family of UNC alumnus William R. Soles gave $600,000 to the Carolina Scholars Program to create the W. Rodger Soles Carolina Scholars Fund for incoming UNC freshmen. Soles retired from Jefferson-Pilot, where he served as the company's chairman and chief executive officer. His son William Soles and daughter M.

Baseball Field Gets JumboTron

UNC baseball fans will have a new way to look at their favorite all-American game this spring. The baseball team's 10-year-old scoreboard, which recently became unreliable, was replaced with a new JumboTron, a scoreboard that includes a large video screen. This new board will have video capability that will allow fans to have a new experience when they attend games, said Mike Fox, UNC baseball coach. Fox said he hopes the new video capability will allow the team to show images of the University, replays and live coverage of the game action.

Greek Forum Educates Pledges on Gender Gap

On Wednesday night, members of UNC's sororities and fraternities completely filled Carroll Hall auditorium, including pledges eager to discuss the difficulties of relating to the opposite sex. Sponsored by the Panhellenic Council and Phi Mu sorority, the program, Gender Gap, which dealt with the relations between males and females and the miscommunications between the two genders, was the first of four new-member seminars that new pledges are required to attend.
