Austin O'Connor topped the podium for the second time in his collegiate career after defeating Penn State's Levi Haines by a 6-2 decision on Saturday, March 18. For a feat that on the surface appears to be the pinnacle of a near year-long recovery, O'Connor sees it as the ultimate reward of a two-decade long career. “I’d definitely say my career was successful, but it wasn’t what I set out to do — I wanted to be a four-time national champ,” he said. “I came here and accomplished a feat that not many people in their lifetime get to accomplish.”
O’Connor cemented himself as one of the best wrestlers to ever step foot in Chapel Hill. A year removed from earning All-American status on a torn ACL, the sixth-year senior claimed his fifth All-American finish this season -- becoming the first Tar Heel to do so.
Despite jumping out to a three-run lead, the No. 14 North Carolina baseball team (11-4, 0-2 ACC) fell to the No. 17 Virginia Cavaliers (14-0, 2-0 ACC), 8-4, on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.
In its conference opener, the No. 14 North Carolina baseball team (11-4, 0-1 ACC) fell to the No. 17 Virginia Cavaliers (13-0, 1-0 ACC), 7-3, on Friday evening at Boshamer Stadium.
As UNC’s locker room opened up for postgame player interviews, Black and Bacot left to walk the halls of the Greensboro Coliseum, before eventually returning to answer questions. During the near five-minute walk, Black said they reflected on their careers at North Carolina.
GREENSBORO, N.C. — The North Carolina men’s basketball team (20-13, 11-9 ACC) fell to the No. 13 Virginia Cavaliers (24-6, 15-5 ACC), 68-59, to end the Tar Heels’ run in the ACC Tournament.
“We go as he (Love) goes,” Leaky Black said. “You know he’s going to shoot the stepbacks, you’ve got to take and give a little bit. Just seeing him be locked in like that is huge.”
With UNC royalty in attendance and the senior-night red carpet rolled out, North Carolina reverted back to its season-long shooting struggles in a 62-57 loss to Duke. For head coach Hubert Davis, the lackluster 5-23 clip from beyond the arc wasn’t the most damning part about his team's 30 percent shooting output from the field. “I thought we had wide open looks from three that we didn’t make,” he said. “But more importantly, I thought we had layups that we missed. We missed a lot of shots around the basket.”
The defeat effectively ends North Carolina hopes of earning an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament.
