Chapel Hill a popular couch surfing destination

College students who want to get away during upcoming breaks often think about crashing on a friend’s couch to keep from breaking the bank. Thanks to the Internet, they can crash on a stranger’s couch, too. Travel website CouchSurfing.org, which has garnered 2,259,314 members since its public launching in 2004, is a network that connects frugal travelers with new friends and old couches across the world.

Triangle-area bank break-ins investigated

Federal and local authorities are investigating a serial bank robber believed to have struck at least six Triangle-area banks in two weeks, including one in Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill police are assisting the state branch of the FBI after the Tuesday robbery of the branch of BB&T bank located at 143 E. Rosemary St.

A shopping center on West Franklin Street that was once a site of controversy might soon be the home of a new development that could potentially alleviate downtown’s lack of parking.The concept plan for The Courtyard shopping center consists of a mixed-use development adding levels to existing buildings.

Orange County proposes sales tax increase to 8%

The Orange County Board of Commissioners met Tuesday for a public hearing on a proposed November referendum on imposing a one-quarter cent county sales and use tax. The referendum would ask county residents to vote for or against the increase in the tax.

City Bike-to-Work Week to hold 8-mile ride Friday

The town is showing its appreciation for those who opt to bike instead of drive this month.May is National Bike Month, and the community is hosting a series of events for the Triangle’s Bike to Work Week running May 17-21.Go! Chapel Hill is coordinating the events to encourage people to embrace the benefits of using alternative forms of transportation.
