New Music Venue Opens In Carrboro

De La Luz, Carrboro's newest live music venue, immerses listeners in sights and sounds in a way few other clubs can. This "performance space," as owner Rick Ramirez prefers to call it, opened Jan. 11 and already has become a viable alternative to establishments such as Go! Rehearsal Studios and Cat's Cradle. "I see it as more of a fidelic listening environment than a loud rock club," Ramirez said.

Doug Martsch Cat's Cradle Thursday, Oct. 17 3 Stars "Mellow" was the word and the rule Oct. 17 at the Cat's Cradle where indie rocker Doug Martsch, frontman of Built to Spill, appeared for a solo concert. The show was intimate and thought-provoking but sparse. A treat for the die-hard Martsch fans in attendance, it lacked enough spice to hold the interest of the less-informed. Martsch was preceded by two opening acts. The first, singer Ian Waters, played a mediocre set of overly simplistic acoustic pop-rock tunes.

Dragging Queens Fail to Rekindle Early '90s Seattle Grunge

Queens of the Stone Age Songs for the Deaf 2 Stars The new Queens of the Stone Age album, Songs for the Deaf, is aptly titled. During its worst moments, you just might wish you were devoid of hearing. Mediocre songwriting and uninspired playing overshadow the few sparks of brilliance buried within the album's better cuts.
