Gov. Roy Cooper recently announced January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month and Jan. 11 as Human Trafficking Awareness Day to promote the role of all North Carolinians in preventing trafficking and helping victims and survivors.
At the Orange County Schools Board of Education meeting on Monday, the OCS Equity Task Force presented their equity plan update and outline for equity training for the Board. After the presentation, the Board unanimously accepted the proposal. The plan focused on three areas: professional development, curriculum adoption and creation and student and community engagement.

On Oct. 14, Gov. Roy Cooper announced that more people rode North Carolina’s intercity rail service during September than any other month in the past 32 years of NC By Train's existence. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, 48,488 passengers rode trains in September — an increase of more than 50 percent from last September.

After 25 years of service to the community, Jabe Hunter, a Chapel Hill Police Department assistant chief, announced his retirement on Oct. 3. Hunter held various positions in the department before he was promoted to serve alongside Police Chief Chris Blue in 2013.
Democrat Lucy Inman and Republican Richard Dietz are competing for Seat 3. The other seat belongs to Democrat Sam Ervin IV, an associate justice of the supreme court since 2014. He is now running for reelection against Republican Trey Allen.
