Over 12,000 votes were cast in the Chapel Hill mayoral election, marking a nearly 20 percent increase from the 2021 municipal election.
“If they value two candidates similarly, but one appears to be doing a lot better than the other, they might choose that candidate to help kind of put them over the top versus someone who doesn't really stand a chance,” Alexander Sahn, an assistant political science professor at UNC, said.
The council voted to designate Dec. 13 as Braxton Dunkin Foushee Day of Service, encouraging residents to learn about local Black history and perform acts of service to neighbors or their community. A land use ordinance amendment to modify residential parking was approved unanimously.
Designed to close the racial achievement gap in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, the Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate program has provided CHCCS students with educational and career opportunities since 1995. The program has been holding training for a new mentor cohort to be matched with scholars in the next month, Lorie Clark, coordinator of student leadership and engagement for CHCCS, said.
“Everybody came out of their doors to see who's moving in,” Barbara Ann Ivey, who recently moved to Covenant Place, said. “And they greeted me and told me their names, if I need anything, ‘Don’t hesitate.’ They were glad I was on the hall.”
The Orange County Board of County Commissioners discussed the new Orange Water And Sewer Authority waste and recycling center, reflected on the Schools Safety Task Force and approved the Orange County N.C. 54 Multimodal Corridor Study in its Sept. 19 meeting.
Cases and hospitalizations from COVID-19 are increasing across the state, according to the NCDHHS respiratory illnesses dashboard. COVID-19 particles are also becoming increasingly found in wastewater — in levels not seen since January.
The Town of Chapel Hill recognized Gun Violence Awareness Day with a rally at the Peace and Justice Plaza on June 2. National Gun Violence Prevention Day is also known as Wear Orange Day.
May is National Bike Month and Chapel Hill and Carrboro are celebrating through activities like the Bike & Roll to School Day, the Chapel Hill Bike On Bus Workshop and the Carrboro Bike Breakfast and Ride into Pride. Both towns are both recognized as silver-level Bicycle Friendly Communities by the League of American Bicyclists for their bikeable infrastructure.
