'It's "Sweeney Todd" now'

When Company Carolina's proposed winter musical "Gypsy" fell through in early December, the theater group didn't take a breath before beginning the daunting task of pulling together the musical "Sweeney Todd" with only three weeks to rehearse before opening night. During auditions for "Gypsy," several other student theater productions were going on, and too few males showed up during auditions to fill the roles, leaving a lopsided cast.

Recitals give students a stage

University students don't always have to wait for performers to come to campus in order to experience different kinds of music. Twice a semester, students in the music department present their own recitals, where they are able to put their studies to work. "The recitals are a chance for students to stand up and get experience in performing in front of a relatively friendly audience," said Tim Carter, music department chairman.

Benefit concert set for victims of fire

The Chapel Hill and Carrboro communities will use music to mobilize support in the wake of last month's deadly fire at Colonial Village at Highland Hills apartment complex by hosting a benefit concert Friday at Cat's Cradle. Cat's Cradle, along with the American Red Cross and five local bands, will come together in an effort to show support and raise money for those affected. Andrea Nell, an employee at Cat's Cradle and a member of two of the bands playing Friday - Birds and Arrows and Sweet By and By - is one of the main organizers of the event.

Carrboro celebrates 10 years of music

This weekend Carrboro will have what Jackie Helvey, co-founder of The Carrboro Music Festival, says is its "greatest day of the year" as it celebrates the 10th anniversary of the festival, a daylong event full of free music, community and culture. The Carrboro Music Festival, which Helvey helped conceive, began as an international celebration known as the "Fete de la Musique," an event that started in France and spread to the U.S.

Russian authors read from personal works

Four prominent Russian contemporary authors will be in Chapel Hill this week, bringing with them an opportunity for the community to explore cultural connections and experience literary diversity. Each writer competed for an opportunity to come to the U.S. through the CEC ArtsLink and the Open World Program at the Library of Congress. The writers will speak about "The Joys and Hazards of Working as a Writer in Russia Today" in a panel discussion to be held at the FedEx Global Education Center today and will read from their personal works at 7 p.m Thursday at Borders in Chapel Hill.
