Accepting Diversity Integral to University

In a week in which Carolina celebrates Race Relations Week, there is not a more critical time to celebrate our diversity. Since Sept. 11, we have seen some beautiful things happen here. We have cared for each other. Islamic students, who tell me they feel safe here, are not threatened because of their faith. That is critical as we continue to embrace them and all races in the Carolina community.

UNC Steps Up to the Plate to Support Sports Ethics

When I hear what it is like on a few Little League baseball fields across America these days, I am saddened. Some parents are provoking coaches, umpires and, yes, even the children who are supposed to be playing and learning from the game.They are yelling about who is doing what wrong and expressing their displeasure in any number of inappropriate ways about how the events on the field or in the dugout are unfolding. In California, for example, the father of an 11-year-old Little Leaguer assaulted a coach for taking his son out of a game.

Awards Ceremony Will Honor Deserving Students and Faculty

On Tuesday the University community will pause to honor some of our very best students as part of the Chancellor's Awards Ceremony. This annual program celebrates student excellence in academics, co-curricular activities and leadership, as well as recognizing the student-selected teaching awards winners. The University is tremendously proud to acknowledge our outstanding students and faculty. Rewarding exceptional work is one of the most effective ways to foster excellence, and these awards do just that.

UNC Should Foster Intellectual Debate

Last Monday as I walked across campus I saw events commemorating Women's Week, Human Rights Week and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Celebration Week. A pro-life display presented by the Genocide Awareness Project was sparking much debate with its graphic photos. I learned the next day that The Daily Tar Heel was grappling with whether to accept David Horowitz's controversial ad concerning slavery reparations.Such a broad mix of events is indicative of the vital intellectual life of our great University.

Chancellor Moeser Asks Students to Celebrate Responsibly\

TO THE EDITOR:As we approach the end of basketball season and the prospect of post-season play, I encourage Tar Heel students and members of our extended family to wear your Carolina blue proudly as you cheer on our teams and show your fullest support for our players. With the help of our outstanding fans, I know UNC can emerge victorious on the basketball court.I also encourage each of you to remember to conduct yourselves appropriately and responsibly. Let our friends in Chapel Hill and beyond know by your actions that you are proud to be a Tar Heel.
