It's good to be back. After 2 1/2 weeks away from Chapel Hill, I breathed a long sigh of relief on Thursday night as my plane skidded to a stop on the runway at RDU.
This is a column that I hoped I would never have to write as editor of The Daily Tar Heel. I am writing to explain, as best I can, the remarkable similarity between Jon Hoffman's Editorial Notebook "Back to Normal," which appeared on Monday's editorial page, and a column written by Rick Reilly that appeared in the Sept.
Don't worry. I'm not going to take your crossword. Go ahead. Breathe a sigh of relief and know that unlike some of my predecessors, I won't be so evil as to threaten to take away your ability to ponder the answer to 34 across in your 9:30 class. I mean, I take classes too. I know how it is.
My vision for The Daily Tar Heel is grounded in two principles -- focus and efficiency. As editor, I would work to bring solid direction to news coverage, to increase the DTH's accountability with its readers and to devise a strategy for making the newsroom run more efficiently.CoverageWhile the DTH can boast solid news coverage, an overarching vision of the paper's most important stories has been missing this year.
