Although the Raleigh Transit Authority recently voted 6-2 to recommend to the Raleigh City Council to reinstate bus fares in July 2023, GoTriangle, GoDurham and GoRaleigh will remain fare-free for the time being. In contrast, Chapel Hill Transit is a fare-free system and has been for two decades.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro residents face difficulties as interest rates and home prices rise and housing becomes more challenging to find. Since 2017, the average rent in Chapel Hill has increased by 37 percent, according to the Town of Chapel Hill's 2022 Affordable Housing Annual Report.
Voters must be registered in order to cast their ballot on Election Day. The deadline to register to vote was Oct. 14, but voters could register in person during early voting, which ended on Nov. 5. To register using same-day registration, voters must have resided in the county they intend to vote in for at least 30 days before Election Day. Following a referendum in the N.C. NAACP v. McCrory case, photo voter identification is not required to cast a ballot in North Carolina.
The North Carolina Botanical Garden will expand the Stillhouse Bottom Nature Preserve in southern Chapel Hill by purchasing 24.7 acres. The organization expects to acquire the land in early 2023. They have a contract and the funds to buy the additional acres.

The Orange County Board of County Commissioners had a joint meeting on Tuesday with the Police Chief’s Association of Orange County Police Academy and multiple county fire departments to discuss special operations team updates, equipment delays and staff shortages.
The North Carolina Forest Service announced on Oct. 10 that the fall wildfire season has started in North Carolina and that people should take precautions during recreational burning. The NCFS works to protect and provide valuable forest resources and runs programs for wildfire prevention and reforestation.
The Monday supply drive was in collaboration with Mutual Aid Disasters Relief's response to the hurricane. The organization sent a box truck from Virginia to pick up hurricane relief supplies in cities and towns on the way to impacted areas in Florida.
This Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hargraves Community Center, off-campus students, residents and others will join together for entertainment and to celebrate community. The Good Neighbor Initiative Community Cookout is a free event, is open to all and will have free food from both Al’s Burger Shack and Ben & Jerry’s.
