Shauna Harris and Shelley Kennedy officially became director and assistant director, respectively, of the Carolina Women’s Center on Jan 2. Leadership vacancies made it difficult for the center to serve the community. Now, Harris and Kennedy say they are beginning to restart the work of promoting gender equity on UNC's campus.
Student achievements this year include the founding of AMEXCAN chapter at UNC, Crips in College and the first Black Pre-Law Association, as well as the hiring of three Asian Americanists in the College of Arts and Sciences in spring 2024.
The student-led UNC Anti-Death Penalty Project is aiming to further the conversation surrounding the death penalty and it's socioeconomic, racial and societal impacts.
UNC students and surrounding community members gathered at the Bell Tower on Sunday afternoon to protest the construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, commonly known as “Cop City,” and the Mountain Valley Pipeline. The group also protested the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization charges against over 60 people, including UNC law student Jamie Marsicano.
Approximately 270 security cameras were installed this summer in residence halls across campus. The University installed the cameras to help enhance security in residence halls by recording individuals as they enter the buildings, but the cameras will not typically be monitored in real-time. They are situated strategically to cover any exterior doors.
The Alert Carolina system is required by the Jeanne Clery Act, which was adopted in the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008. UNC’s campus-wide emergency notification system was recently updated so that only crime alerts which are deemed "urgent" or "critical" will be sent via text message.
The undergraduate college experience is often thought of as a transitional time into adulthood, but the undergraduate experience is not limited to those 18 to 22 years old. Adriana Cook, a senior at UNC, enrolled when she was 59 years old. Last September, she celebrated 14 years of sobriety and overcoming addiction — a feat that started her on the path to higher education. “I couldn’t see that what I was doing was ruining my life at that time,” she said. “I think it’s important for younger students to maybe think about postponing college for a little bit — a year or two — to get some life experience and gain a better appreciation of school when they come back."
In light of increasing overdose-related deaths in the state, UNC continues to combat the opioid epidemic and its effects on North Carolina's communities through research, administrative conversations and treatment programs.

This summer, four UNC undergraduate students will travel to Ecuador alongside Diego Riveros-Iregui, a professor of geography and co-director of the Center for Galapagos Studies, to conduct climate research in the Páramo, a region of the Andes Mountains. These students will pair up with other students from Universidad San Francisco de Quito to analyze the findings.
